LOS ANGELES
It’s hard to describe exactly what’s going on at Birdie G’s, a restaurant named after chef and owner Jeremy Fox’s daughter, Birdie, and his grandmother, Gladys. As the name suggests, this James Beard Award-nominated chef is cooking the traditional food that ties four generations of his family together, but, as he’s meandered around the country, he’s picked up a few wrinkles to add to the Eastern European classics of his childhood. The result is a bright, fun and completely fresh barn house inspired restaurant that offers cuisine based on nostalgia, but with a southern flourish and a distinct California sensibility you might not usually associate with what might be the world’s best Matzo Ball soup.

JEREMY FOX
A master of market-driven cuisine, chef Jeremy Fox is behind Rustic Canyon, Tallula’s and, as of 2019, Birdie G’s in Santa Monica’s historic Bergamot Station. Raised in Atlanta and trained in Charleston, Fox moved to California by way of the midwest and every pit stop along the way has had an impact on his lively and energetic cuisine. As part of his mission to get people to eat their greens, he released the James Beard Award-nominated book, On Vegetables, which goes way beyond recipes and gets real about his struggles with anxiety and addiction while at the helm of Napa Valley’s Ubuntu, one of the most successful and acclaimed vegetarian restaurants in the United States.
