Jewel of the South

Led by James Beard winner Chris Hannah, Jewel’s bar has made early waves, entering the inaugural North America’s 50 Best Bars list at #24. This summer, Jewel made the list of Esquire’s Top 25 Bars in America and then took home top honors for Best Restaurant Bar in America and Best US Bartender for Hannah at Tales of the Cocktail. But the food program led by Englishman Phil Whitmarsh may be the most interesting menu in New Orleans today. Whitmarsh brings a cheeky modern British sensibility to New American cuisine, with a focus on seasonal whole vegetables and diverse animal proteins. The Times Picayune recently said, “Whitmarsh has an ability to make an ingredient taste exactly like itself and also like you’ve never had it before, often turning secondary cuts and humble-sounding vegetables into showstoppers."

Creative Talent

Chris Hannah and Phil Whitmarsh

One of the most iconic and revered bartenders in America, Chis Hannah (Tales of the Cocktail 2022 US Bartender of the Year) seamlessly blends classic and modern into a rich narrative in a city with plenty of source material. His co-conspirator Phil Whitmarsh is one of the rising star chefs in New Orleans. Influenced heavily by London chefs Fergus Henderson (St. John) and Adam Byatt (Trinity), London-born Whitmarsh then added a turn in Adelaide, Australia before moving to New Orleans to work for Nina Compton at Compère Lapin. At Jewel, Whitmarsh is given free license to explore ingredients and techniques, resulting in a hyper-seasonal, menu that is unlike any other in New Orleans.
